The direct method

The direct method

According to the investigation made by the team; the direct method has as its main objective ( communicating using target language ) therefore, It is considered that students should learn how to think in target language, one of the most difficult but valuable goals that students should reach. It is also interesting that in this kind of method the role of teachers and students is to be more like partners in their teaching and learning process, this has of course a simple answer which is the interaction that has go both ways because as its name suggests; It’s a direct method.

Every student has to know that one of their principles is that they are not allowed to use any kind of translation tool in their learning process, experts consider that the target language should be learned just like their mother tongue was, by inferring things on their own and interacting as much a s they can with the environment and people that surround them in certain way, this kind of method makes seem learning a target language as if it was an every day common thing, this is one of the reasons about why they also call it the natural method.

When teaching, teachers must have pretty clear that the language skills that will be their actual concern are: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Their tutors will also be the ones in charge of making these skills work since the very beginning of their students' process. As an important point when teaching, learners who are under the direct method rules should be aware that they shall be taught grammar in an inductive way, and sadly for them an explicit grammar rule shall never be given.

As it was mentioned before, the student must feel like he is learning by inferring everything he is taught, just like when every human is just born. Nowadays some teachers just like in ( Universidad Gerardo Barrios) like to implement some direct method strategies like demonstrations, they will not tell you the meaning of the word you want to learn translated directly into your mother tongue; however what they shall do instead is explaining, sometimes with a little bit of body language help to make a remarkable demonstration.

A list of techniques that can be used with students of any level are:
- Reading aloud
- Question and answer exercises
- Students' self correction
- Conversation practice and fill in the blank
- Paragraph writing and map drawing
