The Audio lingual method

The audio lingual method

As a team and according to our research the audio lingual method has some similarities with the direct or natural method, some of these similarities might be that both of them focuses on spoken language; It is not its only characteristic but It is one that they share, as everyone could infer by this, students should be able to use the target language communicatively.

One of the main and most important rules that students and teachers of this method should take  into account is the fact that no native language should be used in the classroom ( no mother tongue ). Teachers and students will be the ones in charge of making the target language learning process an interactive one, some examples of what has been previously mentioned are: actions, pictures or surrounding objects might be used to give meaning otherwise.

Something that every student should be able to do at a certain moment of their learning process is the particular ability of learning to use language automatically without stopping to think; It is also important to mention that some students shall prefer using their target language only inside their mind ( thinking ) because they feel that no one criticizes them, this fact has been mentioned because of how real it is and also for the fact they feel like this might be not their proper method; however, It is theirs, the only problem in here is the lack of confidence that they might have with themselves, since the very first moment that they started thinking by their own and make any kind of production of the target language, they did become audio lingual true learners.

Just like the students at ( Universidad Gerardo Barrios ), they have all been through this kind of process because at some point of their degree they are undoubtedly asked to form new habits in target language, such as something called ( conversation clubs ) this new technique must be applied outside the classroom which makes it a habit or hobby, and the conversation clubs themselves are mostly audio lingual ways of teaching and learning,

They say that the teacher's role is becoming an ( orchesta leader ) because they will for sure be the ones directing and controlling the language behavior of students most of the time and on the other hand students' role is of course following the teacher’s directions and respond accurately and as rapidly as  possible. It is thought that if students are not capable of producing their own new ideas related to their target language, they could do some effective strategies such as dialogues, learning through imitation and learning through repetition so they can stimulate their target language learning process.

Helping students with small games is a nice idea, of course, always related to the topics taught in classes, making your class a deductive one. It is important to remember that the teacher already handles the language and the students are the ones who should think the most, using their critical thinking might be a nice tool for them.

Some great strategies that might be applied by the teachers are:

- Dialogue memorization
- Repetition drill
- Chain drill
- Single slot, substitution drill
- Transformation drill
- Complete the dialogue.
